Glass half full at Uppingham School

An independent boarding school that has prided itself throughout its 400-year history on offering ‘all-round education’ has expressed delight at 50% of its applicants to Oxford and Cambridge Universities receiving offers in 2011.

Seventeen of 34 pupils from Uppingham School in Rutland were successful – a ‘strike rate’ that is well above the national average.

Pupils intend to study a wide range of subjects from chemistry, medicine, veterinary science and physics through modern languages and philosophy to history, English and music.

Headmaster Richard Harman said: “At Uppingham we emphasise the value of a true all-round education – combining academic work, sport, the arts, sense of community and a strong relationship with the town of Uppingham.

“It is very pleasing when our Sixth Form pupils are doing so well that they receive offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities in such high numbers and across a wide range of subjects and disciplines.  I am sure that they will do very well in their A levels this summer, and enjoy the opportunities that lie ahead.”

The latest success comes hard on the heels of excellent A level results at Uppingham in 2010 when 90.5% of all A levels were graded A*AB grades and 61.3% A*A, while 63 pupils – out of a total of 170 – gained straight A grades.
